Why Locals Love Avenue on Sussex
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Darling Park, Avenue on Sussex is a cafe that truly redefines casual dining with its inspired Australian menu and relaxed, inviting atmosphere. This spot stands out not only for its prime location at Shop 1A/201 Sussex St, Sydney, but for the way it masterfully blends comfort food with a hint of gourmet creativity.
The cuisine here is a delightful celebration of fresh, thoughtful ingredients and comforting flavors. Begin your day or indulge anytime with their standout dishes — the Turkish Cilbir Eggs come highly recommended, offering a silky poached egg experience resting in a creamy, tangy sauce that lingers on the palate, leaving you craving more. For those who prefer a vibrant starter or to share, the crispy zucchini flowers are a revelation: a delicate trio of lightly fried blossoms filled with herbed ricotta, served alongside fragrant basil pesto and sweet confit cherry tomatoes, perfectly balanced by a bright touch of lemon.
Craving simplicity with a twist? Their garlic bread on crusty sourdough infused with roasted garlic, paprika, and herbed butter is a comforting must-try. Meanwhile, the daily deal of any burger paired with a soft drink makes for an unbeatable value, delivering hearty satisfaction with every bite. If you want something with a bit more decadence, the truffle fries or the classic bowl of fries offer the perfect crispy, golden sidekick to your meal.
The ambience at Avenue on Sussex is just as enticing as the food. With heated outdoor areas making al fresco dining cozy even in winter, and a carefully curated playlist that subtly enhances the peaceful atmosphere, it's clear this cafe aims to engage all the senses. The space feels effortlessly welcoming, whether you're meeting friends, grabbing a business lunch, or simply enjoying a leisurely meal. Attentive and accommodating staff further elevate the experience, making every visit memorable.
Visitors have shared heartfelt praise, from Emilio’s declaration of having the best value breakfast in Sydney, to Craig R’s glowing tribute to the shashuka, described as the best he’s ever tasted—rich with melted cheddar cloaking poached eggs like a comforting French onion soup. Yvette’s impression of generous portions and beautiful presentations perfectly sums up the cafe’s balance of quality and care. Even first-time visitors or those less familiar with Aussie fare, like Ashley who loved the corn fritters, find themselves returning for the consistently fantastic flavors and welcoming vibe.
Whether you’re drawn by the zing of cold-pressed orange or cloudy apple juices, the enticing roster of starters, or simply the desire for a satisfying, authentic cafe experience in Sydney’s bustling Darling Park, Avenue on Sussex promises a vibrant culinary journey infused with genuine warmth and creativity.

First time in Sydney, I think this has to be the best food and best value breakfast I've had by far in a while! Don't shy away from the Cilbir Turkish Eggs, they were amazing!

Not an Aussie so not sure what’s typical or traditional but this was personally my favorite corn fritter of my trip! Espresso was good as well and my husband enjoyed his bacon and egg roll.

Although the service was a little slow (short staffed because Fridays are dead in the city now) I just had to write a review about their awesome food (and location!). I ordered the shashuka and it was hands down the best one I’ve ever tasted. Cheddar instead of feta which I prefer toasted and melted over the entire top like French onion soup, with the two poached eggs encased in delicious cheese, all covering a rich lean mince and tomato sauce with peas and spinach thrown in! I mentioned it was the best I’ve tasted to the owner and to my surprise he didn’t take the credit for himself, he shouted the chef to come out the kitchen and told me she created it, as a very smiley and bashful young female chef looked on, fully deserving of the praise. I hope it made her day, as she made mine and I’ll be back!

Stopped by for drinks on way back to hotel. Were drawn in by the superb live music (very Peter Frampton-esque guitar playing). A cold winters' night was soon warmed up with a couple of glasses of very nice mulled wine and sitting next to one of the fires going. Easy going friendly bar staff too.

Fantastic cafe in Sydney CBD. Literally GREAT food and coffee. Safe to walk right in and submit your orders. Located right below the small bridge that links to the Pyrmont bridge, Avenue in Sussex has been around for a while and they’ve endured bad economy and covid. I’ve walked past this cafe so many times and wanted to sit down and actually try what they have to offer. I had the Famhouse Omelette: Three egg open omelete with field mushrooms, roma tomato, cheddar cheese, sautéed spinach, topped with crispy shallots and served with crusty sourdough. I also tasted mozzarella cheese. What a GREAT portion! The omelette visually had the WOW factor and it was beautifully displayed on a wooden board. Even the sourdough was extra large. And I got two. All the ingredients inside the omelette were fresh, made sense, and it was very well cooked by the chef. I was certainly very full. Now Coffee. It had to be great as the cafe is surrounded by a lot of office buildings. I ordered flat white. Good quality coffee beans with nice caffeine kick, it wasn’t burnt, and milk froth was silky just like how it should be. Btw I don’t work here or related to the owner. For these reasons I give this place above average of 4 bears.
